Ants are out and about in North Babylon and Sayville, NY
Ants are small insects that lives in a complex social colony with one or
more queens. They are wingless except for fertile adults, which often
form large mating swarms. Most ants feed on sweets, except for carpenter
ants, which prefer protein. On Long Island you may see some of these
ants…
Pavement Ant: These are small brown ants that are often found on the
pavement. They nest in cement cracks and can look for food up to 30 feet
away from their nests.
Sugar or Odorous House Ant: These ants have an odor if crushed and are
hard to get rid of. You usually find these in your kitchen! The colonies
are very large with multiple queens.
Carpenter Ant: These are the largest ant that makes tunnels in rotting
trees or wood, but will nest in any hollow area that is near their food
or water source. These ants do not eat wood, like most people think, but
hollow out wood to make their nests.
Avoid letting these pests enter your home by keeping all your kitchen
surfaces clean and don’t leave food out. Also look for openings where
ants can enter your house. Try to patch any cracks in your walls or
windows. If you do see ants invading your home, call EcoTech
